WHY WE STARTED

In 1982. . .

Miles and Debi Musick had a dream to open a family centered home for pregnant young women. They felt a desire to surround a young woman, who felt alone, with love and support. At this time, they were living in an apartment in Tacoma, Washington. They lived with their one-year-old daughter, Malia, but knew that they needed a house

to see that dream come true.

On a trip to California, the Musick’s had sparked up a conversation with a pregnant woman that had experienced previous abortions.

The young girl expressed that she wished she had more support and

a solid foundation to live on so that she could have made a choice for life. The Musick's put their dream into action and asked the women

to move in.

After much prayer and divine appointments from the Lord they found a house in Tacoma at a more then reasonable price. The home had

5 bedrooms and 1 bathroom but that was all the Musick's needed

to start their ministry. Soon after getting the home Miles built

a bathroom in one of the upstairs closets and Youth with A Mission (YWAM), New Beginnings Homes (NBH) was born.

The Musick's felt a mix of apprehension and hope as they navigated this unexpected journey. With their first gift of $15, the prospect

of establishing a home for pregnant women felt daunting.

Yet, they had faith because of Jesus that they could make it work.

As they rummaged through garage sales in search of furniture, they encountered a young woman who would play a pivotal role in their story. Angela Connelly, then a 16-year-old with a heart full of dreams, was passionate about helping pregnant women and providing them

with a haven as well. Unbeknownst to the Musick’s, Angela’s deep connection to the very house they were transforming into a home would soon unfold.

When they spoke on the phone, Angela’s voice brimmed with excitement as she learned about the location. “That is the house

I grew up in!” she exclaimed, her memories flooding back.

The basement, where she had once lived, still held remnants of her childhood—the mural she had painted, depicting a pregnant woman resting in bed, told a story of hope and life. It served as a poignant reminder of the purpose they were all working towards.

Now with her husband and nine children, Angela remained dedicated to the mission that she and the Musick’s shared. This divine appointment not only reconnected Angela with her past but also ignited a collaborative spirit that would guide them in their journey

to create a sanctuary for women faced with challenging circumstances.

Together, they would weave a new tapestry of compassion, support, and hope, drawing strength from their intertwined stories and the divine moments that brought them together. With each piece

of furniture they gathered and each conversation they had, they moved closer to making their dream a reality.

Miles and Debi didn't know what they were in for as the first week the home opened. Six pregnant women moved in, one after the other for the next six days! They learned the hard way about needing house rules and putting together a program. The organization began as

a response to the urgent needs of pregnant young women who required a haven.

Established in 1992, The journey of New Beginnings Puyallup

is a testament to resilience and the power of community support. Transitioning from a less suitable location in McKinley Hill to a more serene environment in Puyallup, the Musick family took on the challenge of restoring a 1901 farmhouse. Despite the home's dilapidated state after years of neglect, their commitment and faith led to the miraculous rebuilding of the New Beginnings Home.

Through dedicated volunteers and generous donations, the home was completed in 1994, providing a nurturing environment for over 600 young women aged 12 to 42. With the establishment of 12 sets

of house parents, the program has created a supportive community that emphasizes care and guidance.

Expanding its mission, New Beginnings opened its first aftercare home in 2010, catering to birth mothers who need continued support, followed by a second aftercare home for single mothers and their babies in 2011. These developments demonstrate a continued commitment to the well-being of mothers and their children, ensuring they have the resources and community support necessary to thrive.

Overall, the story of New Beginnings Puyallup illustrates how compassion and collaboration can significantly impact the lives

of those in need, offering hope and a brighter future to young women facing challenging circumstances. We continue to provide a haven for mothers who need support.
